Deepa-Raya 2009

Home Away from Home

The weather was bright and sunny.  And it was a great event to meet up with old friends and to make new acquaintances.  What else could one ask for at the MPBA Deep-Raya Potluck?

How about some delicious Nasi Lemak, Nasi Briyani, Curry Chicken, Lamb Curry, Fried Kuay Teow, Samosas, Chicken Tikka, Roti Prata...just to name a few??

This year's MPBA Deepa-Raya Potluck was held on October 24, at the MIDA San Jose office at 226 Airport Parkway.

Volunteers started decorating and setting up by 10.30 am, and attendees began trickling in by 11:15 am, helping themselves to Teh Tarik, Air Bandung and scrumptious appetizers.

Emcee Semara Hassan, Vice-President of MPBA, welcomed the attendees followed by an introduction of the Guest-of-Honor, Mr. Sohaimi, Director of MIDA, who gave a welcome speech and wished all attendees Happy Deepavali and Selamat Hari Raya. Semara then introduced the MPBA organization, the board members and the volunteer committee, and all those who helped out at the event.

The event was a success with more than 77 people joining in on the festivities - it exceeded our expectations! It was the perfect way to celebrate, and to share and enjoy the cultural diversity and foods of the many races of Malaysia. It was truly home away from home! To add to the fun, we also played an ice-breaker game to find someone who came from the same hometown with the same birth date. Everyone had a great time as we started mingling around and by the end of the hour, most seemed to know everyone in the room before the winners were even found. It was discovered that some Malaysians lived in the Bay Area for 20 years before finding MPBA that day!

Thanks again to all those who helped put the event together and who helped out that day!
